Sfendyli and Aposelemis
Near Hersonissos lies the fascinating history of Sfendyli. This small village was completely covered by water when the Aposelemis Dam was built in 2012. You might see the historical stone structures of the village reappear above the water especially in summer during dry seasons. This offers a striking, poignant view of a lost community. The Aposelemis Dam itself is Crete’s largest water project. It collects over 30 million cubic meters of water from the Lasithi Mountains. This massive artificial lake now supplies water across the region and acts as a new wetland sheltering various bird species.
Visit the impressive Minoan Palace of Malia, located only 3 kilometers east of the modern town, close to Potamos Beach. This historical site stands as the third largest Minoan palace in Crete, covering 7,500 square meters. The palace gained global recognition when the Minoan Palaces of Crete were inscribed on the UNESCO list in 2025. UNESCO specifically recognized the universal significance of the Minoan Civilization’s palaces, including Malia. Walking these magnificent ruins gives you a powerful look into the island’s magnificent Bronze Age past.
